My main interest is taking part in a consortium aimed at optimizing the productivity of biomass sweet sorghum with varying architectures, processing biomass of this crop to produce solid and liquid sugars, ethanol, biogas, feed and fertilizers.
Such a project would fit both subthemes 1 and 2.
e.g. for subtheme 1: the project deliverables would meet increasing demand from strategically located, bio-refining chains producing bioenergy, a range of bio-based products and soil nutrients. Product-oriented breeding would be undertaken to optimize yields across the system.
e.g. for subtheme 3: sorghum is a C4 plant with a good level of resilience to marginal agricultural areas (common in the Mediterranean region) and harsh conditions associated with climate change, which would foster synergy between economic value addition and the preservation of High Nature Value areas since sorghum is a low input crop. The production and transformation of biomass sweet sorghum would therefore follow the requirements of environmental sustainability as recalled under subtheme 3.
I can contribute a working draft to partners.
The Council for Agricultural Research and Economic Analysis (CRA) is Italy's largest public agricultural research agency. CRA general scientific competences lie within the fields of agriculture, agroindustry, food, fishery and forestry. The distribution of the CRA offices throughout national territory allows it to widely extend its expertise and proficiency, and to closely operate in conjunction with central administrations, local and regional institutions, companies and various trade, industrial and legal associations.
CRA-CIN has worked on sorghum crop for tens of years.
