The Institute plans to collaborate on projects related to the development of thermal insulation materials using biomass raw materials from agriculture. Is considered one of the most promising sources of agricultural renewable resources is Fiber cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.). Hemp stems are one of the most promising building materials for heat and sound insulation, furniture and other plate’s production. It should be noted that using solar energy, 1 ha of hemp produces 4 times faster organic mass and 4 times more CO2 than 1 ha of forest.
Institute of Physical Energetics (IPE) was established in 1946. IPE is the leading institute in Latvia in the field of energy research. Its main activities cover a wide scope of energy research issues, such as the modeling and analysis of the energy - environment interactions, the energy - environmental policy studies, the pricing and tariff policy in the energy sector, the energy efficiency improvement and energy conservation programs. Integration of the technologies directed towards the rational use of energy to ensure sustainable development of the Latvian energy sector and optimization of the heat energy production and consumption systems in Latvia are given special attention in the research work of the institute.

The Laboratory of Energy Resources IPE is dealing with the research work in renewable energy using (biomass, solar, wind, small hydro, etc.), combined energy supply systems, energy efficiency and energy saving, energy planning – strategy – policy, mathematical simulation models in energetic and fuel stock optimization, energy – environment interactions. The goals and tasks of the Laboratory work are to investigate not only traditional energy supply systems, but also those in combination with renewable energy resources and bioenergy.
